Premature Ejaculation: Is Masturbation the Villain in Males?

Premature ejaculation is a frequent sexual complaint and a treatable condition.  Physical conditioning in a man's youth may have encouraged premature ejaculation during masturbation or with partners due to a need for haste during sexual experiences, but practice and various techniques can help retrain the body.

PREMATURE EJACULATION: A COMMON, TREATABLE CONDITION

Many men occasionally ejaculate sooner during sexual intercourse than they or their partner would like, which can be frustrating and humiliating. As long as it happens infrequently, it's not a big cause for concern. However, if you regularly ejaculate sooner than you or your partner wishes (before intercourse begins or shortly afterward), you may have a condition known as premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation is just a symptom, and a common sexual complaint. Estimates vary, but as many as one out of three men may be affected by this problem at some time. Both psychological and biological factors can play a role in premature ejaculation.

Although many men feel embarrassed to talk about it, premature ejaculation is a common and treatable condition. It is believed to be a learned response, and is therefore treated in uncomplicated cases by retraining ejaculatory control.

MASTURBATION AND PREMATURE EJACULATION

Masturbation is the deliberate induction of sexually pleasurable sensations in the self by means of physical or psychic stimuli. It is often, but not necessarily, carried to the point of orgasm. Masturbation in one form or another is an almost universal activity among men and is probably equally so among women.

Until recently, active self-induction of sexual pleasure was so heavily discouraged by persons in positions of authority that many individuals feel great guilt and perceive masturbation as a problem, a weakness, or a perversity. The American Medical Association considers ‘Masturbation a normal part of adolescent sexual development.’ Masturbatory frequency is likewise dictated by levels of sexual tension, opportunity, absence of distractions, habit, or strength of sexual stimuli. Frequencies varying from several times per day to never are considered normal.

Premature ejaculators are more than often in a hurry in their early sexual experiences, which can condition the body for premature ejaculation during masturbation and with sexual partners. The sexual act is commonly enacted in a situation where urgency and risk of discovery and disapproval from authorities is important (drive-in movies, automobile back seats, living room sofas). In addition, men with premature ejaculation commonly have a history of premarital petting to orgasm by rubbing against their partner while fully clothed.

It is believed that these early sexual experiences of rushing through sexual encounters –- i.e., situations in which one has consistently hurried to reach climax in order to avoid being discovered, or has guilt feelings — may establish a pattern that can be difficult to change later in life.

TREATING PREMATURE EJACULATION
: PRACTICE DURING MASTURBATION OR SEX

The treatment of premature ejaculation is simple but tedious. The subject needs to unlearn the conditioned responses of early sexual experiences and learn new cues by retraining under guidance.

In addition to this, the subject is advised to use the following techniques in various combinations:  the “squeeze” technique, numbing creams or condoms, distraction methods, tantric/yogic breathing techniques, Kegel exercises, experimenting with different sexual positions, circular hip movements, and learning to relax various muscles of body which normally contract during ejaculation.

The only medicines that can help in delaying ejaculation are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors.

If nothing works for you on a particular day, try just laughing and telling your partner that it happened because she was too hot. By doing this, you can maintain her sexual attraction to you even if you could not last longer in bed.

  1. Dr. Sidhu: I think this is an excellent piece on the possible correlation between masturbation and premature ejaculation. I wish you the best of luck on your paper.

I completely agree with your assumptions, and feel that the need for an adolescent to “rush” through the process of masturbation to ejaculating leads to a “quick trigger” in the later years. Relax, and enjoy what is natural. Then everything will be fine.

  2. As a man who suffered from premature ejaculation, I can say that your advice is spot on in terms of “practicing” to “retain guidance.” Our bodies get into habits, and the question is: what habit is it following now, and how can we change it? If a man suffers from premature ejaculation due to bad masturbation techniques, it’s something that can be changed. . . But it takes time and effort like you pointed out.

To reiterate another thing Dr. Sidhu pointed out: I’ve tried SSRIs in the past and they can help, so long as you don’t go overboard, have a healthy penis because erections and libido decrease a bit with them. They are a good starting point on gaining back control if your premature ejaculation is bad.

  3. I feel we do our young men a disservice by having them feel that they are doing something wrong by exploring what their bodies are capable of .

I know when I was young , my grandmother found me playing with my pecker , and she hit my dick with a hair brush and told me “.Baby jesus sees everything you do ” Well , that fucked me up for a long time .
At one point , we’ll understand what our bodies are for , and stop looking down on what it means to be male . We are wonderful beings !!
