Some of these declines are acceptable given the adequacy of their replacements, while others (esp. the living things) are truly frightening |

In 16 minutes 3 people lost their lives at the Detroit marathon... |
I recall reading about biopsies done on long distance runners' quad muscles 1 week after a marathon. It showed that there was extensive structural damage and some of the muscle fibers were even turned inside out!
It would be interesting to see details on what happens to runners that participate in "ultramarathons".

| Eating Fruit We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat. What is the correct way of eating fruits? IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH If you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities. FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two (2) slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.... So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat! Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight. When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins. But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look! KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange. APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke. STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radical ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, pr event & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer. WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher.. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system.. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium. GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes. Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn in to fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal. A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive....

| Well JP its not often I disagree with you, and I'm not really going to here, however, I think there can me more to it. For example fruits such as paw paw and pineapple are often suggested to be eaten with or after a big meal because they contain digestive enzymes which are important in the breakdown of proteins such as papain (pawpaw) and bromelain (pineapple). Besides that, interesting theory.
Also regarding the greying hair, I believe there is much more involved.
Other than that, very interesting article.

Other than that, very interesting article. | I raised my eye brows at some of this, but I went ahead and passed it along for what it's worth. Drinking cold liquid along with eating fatty foods, makes sense to me.

In fact in Chinese medicine consuming anything very cold is considered bad for you over time as it begins to extinguish the "digestive fire" that is required to digest food. Thats why Traditional Chinese foods are generally cooked and eaten at or above room temperature. They believe that the loss of digestive enzymes due to cooking is offset against the fact that cooked food is already partially digested. (In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory)

| Don't you just love it when a TOTALLY OBSCURE PERSON suddenly has a full write-up on their life and adventures appear in a third source? Reminds me of Col Prouty's comments that he read a complete write-up on Lee Harvey Oswald in the Auckland Times (New Zealand) in what would have been (subtracting for time zone differences) only a few minutes after JFK's assassination. They've got some quick writers at the FBI, don't they? J Edgar Hoover trained them well back in the old days, and I see the skills in his Agency are just as sharp. Little wonder they fired Mulder & Skully! JP This is in part, from the Wiki article.

Suspect
Hasan in 2007
Major Nidal Malik Hasan, age 39, was a U.S. Army psychiatrist at the time of
the shooting. In July 2009 he had been transferred to Fort Hood from
Washington's Walter Reed Medical Center.[1]
Early life and education
Hasan described himself as being of Palestinian descent as his mother was
born in Palestine.[11] His parents immigrated to the US from a small
Palestinian town near Jerusalem.[12] He was born in Virginia, where he grew
up. He joined the army immediately after high school, and in exchange the
army paid for him to go to college and subsequently to medical school.[12]
Hasan graduated in 1997 from Virginia Tech, where he was a member of
ROTC,[13] with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and in 2003 from the
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences with a medical degree
(M.D.), and later finished his residency as a psychiatrist.[14][15] In 2009,
he completed a fellowship in Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry at the
Center for Traumatic Stress.[16]
Recent context and possible harassment
Hasan was promoted from Captain to Major in May 2009.[16][17] Before being
transferred to Fort Hood in July 2009, Hasan had received a poor performance
evaluation.[18]
According to Hasan's aunt, Noel Hasan of Falls Church, Virginia, he had
sought for several years to receive a discharge, due to harassment relating
to his religion, Islam. An Army spokesman could not confirm the aunt's
statement.[19]
Hasan had come to the attention of federal authorities at least six months
before the attacks because of internet postings he may have made discussing
suicide bombings[20] and other threats. However, it remains unclear that he
was the author of the posts, and no official investigation was opened.[18]
According to retired Colonel Terry Lee, "He said maybe Muslims should stand
up and fight against the aggressor. At first we thought he meant help the
armed forces, but apparently that wasn't the case. Other times he would make
comments we shouldn't be in the war in the first place."[13]
Hasan was about to be deployed, whether to Iraq or Afghanistan is
unclear,[21] on November 28. According to Jeff Sadoski, spokesperson of U.S.
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, "Hasan was upset about his deployment".[15]
Hasan's cousin, Nader Hasan, a lawyer in Virginia, said that Nidal Hasan
turned against the wars after hearing the stories of those who came back
from Afghanistan and Iraq.[22] Noel Hamad said, however, that the family did
not know he was being sent to Iraq. "He didn't tell us he was going to
deploy," she said.[23]
Faizul Khan, the former imam of a mosque in Silver Spring, Maryland, where
Hasan prayed several times a week, said he was "a reserved guy with a nice
personality. We discussed religious matters. He was a fairly devout
Muslim."[11]
According to his cousin, Nidal Hasan was a practicing Muslim who had become
more devout after the deaths of his parents in 1998 and 2001.[12] However,
his cousin does not recall him ever expressing any radical or anti-American
views.[12] The cousin added that Hasan had been harassed by his Army
colleagues because of his Middle Eastern ethnicity. Said the cousin, "He was
dealing with some harassment from his military colleagues. I don't think
he's ever been disenchanted with the military. It was the harassment. He
hired a military attorney to try to have the issue resolved, pay back the
government, to get out of the military. He was at the end of trying
everything."[24]
According to some sources, Hasan is single with no children.[25][26]
However, a former neighbor of Hasan, David Cook, said two sons were living
with Hasan at that time, around 1997, and they attended local schools. Cook
said of him, "As far as I know, he was a single father. I never saw a
wife."[11] |
