jelqing has such a great following because it works. The principle of jelqing is to force blood into the penis. Pumping does the same thing, right? So how are they different? And why is pumping generally not regarded as a viable option to increase length and girth? Or rather, why is it not as consistent as jelqing?

That is a GREAT question, but I am not sure of the answer. I hope someone
with a more scientific background than mine will chime in with the answer.

All I can say is that jelqing and stretching (manual) worked GREAT for me.
All that the penis pump has done for me is increase my flaccid girth and
    stretched my foreskin.

Pumping just allows you to fill your shaft with around the maximum amount of blood it can take by using a pressure differential. It also helps expand your penis by extracting and building up fluid from lymphatic glands in the penis by the same mode of action. The theory is you will permanently enlarge your penis by having your penis at the maximum and slightly pushing the limits each time, and the cumulative effect over months of continued use of regular pumping sessions will inevitably enlarge your penis little by little. For some the vacuum pressure also helps to pull your inner penis to the outside and the same theory applies to your ligaments, stretching them bit by bit until you have basically forced (encourage?) a fatter and longer penis. Whatever method you choose, it's the dedication and consistency that counts the most

I have never pumped so I am only giving my opinion. The biggest difference is that pumping is a static exercise (your smooth muscle cells are expanded and kept in that state), while jelqing is a dynamic exercise (you expand the cells and then deflate them). I personally believe that if you fill a balloon up with air and keep it like that for X amount of time, and then you also take a second balloon and keep filling it with air and then releasing the air, that the second balloon will have undergone more structural change than the first one. Release the air from both and then blow them up until they burst, the second one will burst first. Perhaps a poor analogy, but if it is a good one then blowing up your smooth muscle cells and then deflating them may very well allow for more future enlargement than statically enlarging them via a pump.

That's an interesting analogy rbi and I reckon there's something to it. You can do that sort of thing with pumping too, and the technique called "milking the tube".

I think (which can be dangerous) that expanding and contracting the smooth muscle cells quickly will cause more structural change than gradually expanding and contracting. As I stated before I haven't ever used a pump, but I would assume to "milk" it would take much more time than a jelq does.

Let's see, well it's about a third of the way down on GTO's article Penis Pumping Techniques | PEGym. It's basically a fancy name for pulling repeatedly on the tube. So it's pretty quick. He also talks of a technique he calls pulsing though, which is a slower process.

G4 mentioned that he got a lot of extra foreskin from pumping. I haven't really seen that occur for me, but I did feel like jelqing contributed to a bit of extra skin. My wife thought so as well, in fact she was the one that brought it up I think. I make sure I enter the pump retracted and erect, which is something I don't think G4 did at first.
