Both are good in their own right, but typically squeezes are more advanced.

They're just a bit different, as far as intensity, that's all. Squeezes create intense internal pressure, and jelqs push blood in. Think of doing the exercises with an air filled balloon, and you'll see what I mean.
Some of the most effective manual routines I've read about either add or incorporate compression type exercises.
Such as jelqing sets with squeezes and/or ulis added in between. Or, squeezes that turn into jelqs.
However, very advanced, and one should probably have experience climbing the exercise tree of intensity before trying those. Big Al posted it before, but I can't recall where.Going an inch and 1/2 deeper than before

Try KITJ, best of both worlds.

Jelqs are a good foundation. Tried and tested, and effective if done properly and cautiously. Easily modified for different intensity levels, and even purpose.
Squeezes are a bit more advanced, and specific to their focus. Something you would move on to, or add to your routine.
It's like this. Jelqs are like a backpack, and you can do a lot with an empty bag.
Squeezes are like a laptop case. Made for one thing, but you can get a little creative. But it's really great for laptops.
You can put a laptop in a backpack. Or, you can put both in the backpack, carry them separately, or use one or the other. But you won't fit everything your backpack does in a laptop bag. Their just different, even though they both hold stuff. Hope that makes sense.Going an inch and 1/2 deeper than before

You can start with wet jelqs for girth. Squeezes "isolate" girth better than jelqs since there's little sliding involved.
Intensity-wise, a jelq can be as intense as the squeeze if a higher degree of erection is involved. The same goes for any other girth exercise- the higher degree of erection involved, the more advanced and targeted towards girth the exercise will be. There's also an increase in risk when you start going above 90% erect in your exercises since you'll need to use a lot more force to mold the tissues of the penis with that high of an erection level.Want a FREE Month of Coaching? While doing wet jelqs I usually go anywhere from 40 to 70% erect, occasionally higher but the effort involved is very intense. Not sure I'm ready for a higher intensity yet as I'm not quite 2 months into my beginner routine
