  • Inches with decimals?

How are people getting their measurements in inches with decimals? (like 6.3) I've never seen a ruler or measuring tape that had inches with decimals, they're all in 32nds or 64ths or something. So why don't people say things like 6 5/32?
    2/27/13: BPEL: 6.25" MEG: 5.0" BEG: 5.75"
    12/20/13: BPEL: 7.0" MEG 5.0"
    4/20/18" BPEL: 6.5" MEG: 5.0" BEG: 5.75
Intermediate goal: BPEL: 7" MEG: 5.5 BEG: 6.0"
Ultimate goal: BPEL: 8.0" MEG: 6.0" BEG 6.5"

I think it's because some rulers/tapes come with inches in units of 10.
    Going for that boing factor.

If you are used to working in the metric system it is a lot easier to convert by not using fractions etc. Any online converter will convert from mm to inches to a few decimel places but it wont give you the fraction result

Because it is easier to write than fractions. It don't really make a difference just a preference. As a programmer, I prefer floating points and it looks cleaner.

Or you could just use the metric system like the rest of the world

You could just cm but whether you write in centimeters or in inches or in decimals is a preference and all have their conversation to the closest value. Use what you are comfortable with. So the US uses inches and not metrics (like the rest of the world), who cares.

Grandpa Simpson's thoughts on the metric system:

The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets forty rods to the hogs head and that's the way I likes it!!!

Using decimals can be more precise and it gives you a really good perspective as you get your gains. Whenever possible, use cm and convert it to inches, which will give you a pretty accurate measurement. If you can't, just figure out what your measurement is and divide the fraction to get the decimal rather than writing the fraction. Easy peasy. You'll be glad you did.

Try not to use text speak, it makes things hard to understand for many here at the gym.

                          Why not just use the fractions, 7 1/4 = 7.25, 7 3/8ths = 7.375

I usually see something like 7.3 and figure the guy is just guessing at that point.
