when measuring BPEL with a normal ruler, how hard should you press against the bone?

As far as possible w/o drawing blood. Keep in mind you are pushing a blunt instrument into your fat pad. A common result of this is a mearsurement that is smaller than you really are. I like JP's idea of using a 1/8 in wooden dow rod and marking it off. The dow rod is less invassive and does not hrt as much.

I used a metal ruler and was able to get a larger reading than any other way i've tried.

With the wooden dowel, you can press it into that hollow right above the top of the shaft. This will NEVER change. You will get a true and accurate gains measurement with this tool.
