  • Minoxidil induced ED + How do I know if I have ligament damage?

    So here's a backstory,

I'm a healthy 21 year old man. I used 5% minoxidil foam for 2 weeks twice a day. During the first week I had noticed a drop in libido, I found it extremely strange, I noted it and kept going with my life. I went on a date with a girl and she sat on my lap when I had an erection, I felt some discomfort but no actual pain, not enough to worry about, (I did feel some bad blue balls though, that lasted for hours after the date)
    .

I felt emotionally numb and foggy during the entire date, was disconnected and I kind of liked it, I felt I was more confident.

I came home and noticed a surging feeling near my prostate/ball area, it was a surging tingling sensation, like a mini tornado was surging in there. I thought perhaps it was a result of blue balls, but I have never experienced this feeling in my entire life, it was nothing I had ever known. I ignored it.

I had arranged to meet that same girl 2 days from that night, I figured I was going to get some action from her. So while I was in bed alone, I decided to put a condom on just to see how it goes, (cause normally condoms give me performance anxiety) and i couldn't even get an erection, also I had no interest in even trying to achieve an erection it was like my sex drive was destroyed, I wanted to go to sleep more than anything. This was completely unlike me, so I knew something was wrong.

So I fell asleep and woke up to no morning erection, just a limp, sad penis. I knew something was wrong, this has never happend to me before. The only thing I was using in regards to drugs was minoxidil. I then noticed my flacid penis had shrink in girth and was strangely longer whilst I was having a shower. (This was extremely bizarre and I have never experienced this before either.

So I did some research and found many men attributing their loss of libido and loss of erections to Minoxidil.

So I stopped using minoxidil on the 12th of June on Sunday 2016.

Slowly as weeks progressed I started getting these symptoms:

sleep problems, anxiety, depression, emotional numbness, water retention, constipation, severely dried skin, very bad dandruff, lowered appetite, fatigue, joint pains, premature ejaculation, watery semen, very weak erections (60% in strength) not very rigid, muscle spasms, brain fog, heart palpitations, loss of nocturnal/morning erections, loss of sensation in orgasms.

First 2-3 weeks, porn did not seem as appealing as it used to, I would have to focus very hard to get aroused by watching it. I would lose my erections very easily, as soon as I would lift my hand off my penis. I would have to force my self to masturbate.

During these weeks, I would experience dull aches and pains in my testicles and penis shooting through it at random times.

For the 1st Month off of Minoxidil I was experimenting with herbs such as tribiuls and horny goat weed. I found tribilus is the only thing that helped the situation in regards to firmer erections and slightly helped my sex drive, but did not help any of the other side effects. However I stopped taking these supplements because I felt it would just confuse the process of recovery for me and I wouldn't know whether or not I was genuinely getting better or it was the supplements.

On the 2nd month, I started noticing a recovery, my sex drive and zest for life was coming back, the depression and emotional numbness had completely disappeared, my orgasms were feeling better. I was feeling I was well on my way to recovery at that point and even canceled my appointment with the urologist. However my penis was still less girthy and hanged lower than it used to (hangs at 4-6 inches) when it used to hang at roughly 3 inches, and was much fuller and had more girth.

1 week later, this 'recovery' was short lived and I gradually fell back to my old state, however no where near as bad as it once was. I could still get erections and felt more easily aroused by pornography.

3rd month off of Minoxidil (17th of september 2016)
So basically this is where I am right now.
Most of the side effects have gone away except for the :

Side effects that are still present:
Low libido, loss of girth in flacid penis and the lower hanging flacid penis that is more flimsy and bendy than before and no morning/nocturnal erections. My erections have gotten stronger and almost at full capacity, however premature ejaculation still lingers and my libido is still quite low.

I'm in a much better state right now then I was 3 months ago, but I am still not at 100% yet.

I am just wondering at this point, is the cause of my flacid penis hanging so strangely low (out of my body)
due to a ligament tear? I noticed when my penis is erect, it is at a slight curve that I never had, and at the base is very locked in. I thought it may be peyronies disease, but I went to my urologist and he assured me there was no sign of fibrosis or scar tissue.

Could my strange low hanging penis and slight curvature be from a ligament tear/sprain/bruise from when that girl sat on my dick while i had an erection? or could this all be due to the minoxidil aswell? I have spoken to many men who have experienced all these sexual side effects from minoxidil and not one of them have experienced a longer flacid penis, only shrinkage.

I am very worried about the state of my flacid penis and whether or not it'll return to its smaller, fuller, girthy self. Would appreciate all feedback except people telling me this is all in my head.

    Thank you.

Okay, so initially I went to a GP and told her about my situation with the minoxidil. She said that is not a usual side effect but told me some people react strangely to certain drugs. She told me not to stress and these side effects will soon resolve. She didn't ask to see my penis or anything, she just told me to get some blood work done in a week if the symptoms still persist.

So I got the blood test done and everything came back normal except for my testosterone which appeared to be in the low range, but she said it was still in range therefore it is considered normal..

      Testosterone: 13.2 nmol/L ( 8.0 - 29.0 )

Also my my TSH seemed quite high for a 21 year old, in my opinion

      TSH: 3.7 mIU/L ( 0.30 - 4.00 )

So after she reassured me my blood work was fine, she told me the side effects will go within a few weeks.

4 weeks later, nothing changed, it seemed like it was only getting worse so I returned. She then told me there was no reason I should be still experiencing these side effects from minoxidil and told me that these are the type of side effects you get from propecia. I agreed with her but told her I only used minoxidil. She then continued to insinuate it was all anxiety/stress induced and I should perhaps see a therapist. I left.

I then go to a urologist and tell him the story, he then inspected my penis and gave me a prostate exam and told me everything seemed anatomically fine and nothing was physically wrong with me. And even my low hanging penis was in the realm of normality as far he was concerned. He told me the shrinkage was perhaps due to lack of blood flow to the penis, which made sense. He told me there was no sign of scar tissue/peyronies, even though I have a noticeable curvature to my erection now, that I didn't used to. I still didn't understand what was causing it to hang so low. He believed my problems were from minoxidil but told me there was nothing he could do for me apart from giving me a perscription to viagra. So I left, it was a relief knowing I didn't have peyronies, but still left a few questions unanswered. I asked him if he thought that these sexual side effects were permanent and all he said was, 'probably not'.

So he was the last Dr I have visited. I'm contemplating making a return visit in regards to the possibility of a suspensory ligament injury. But I don't know how he could have missed that? How could a urologist miss something like that?

A ligament issue is very unlikely . Your range of issues is confusing ,certainly some seem down to anxiety . How does it feel when you do a hindi squat ? How about when You (carefully) lift a heavy weight /

You really think a ligament issue is unlikely bro? Like, what else could explain the fact it hangs so low when it's flacid and the disconnection between my dick and I when I attempt kegels? I lift heavy weights 5 days a week, and I experience no pain. I don't do squats, but I have not experienced any pain in my penis or any where else for maybe 2 months now, it was only within the first month I felt any, it wasn't strong either just a slight ache if I did a small kegel at times. When I masturbate and get a full erection, I have no pain either. I can achieve full erections now, can almost get them to the point where they're throbbing at times. There is slight numbness to it, but not as bad as it was in the first month.

Could lack of blood circulation be the reason it hangs so low? I'm perplexed because I've read ligament injuries were the only reason for the penis to hang abnormally low in its flacid state. I still don't get morning erections consistently, at times I get nocturnal erections but most cases they're rare nowadays.

My penis hangs 6 " plus so it isn't impossible . In any case your current symptoms don't seem too bad.

It's not just the 'hang' thats concerning bro, its just so floppy and bendy. Can literally bend it in half if I wanted to. My old penis was much shorter at only 3 inches with decent full girth, now it's skinny and hangs there. Just doesn't feel like my old penis anymore. So more likely minoxidil as opposed to a ligament tear in your opinion? I'm feeling so defeated from this, man...

I am not sure what it is besides anxiety which I am sure you have . You have not told me how hindi squat feels.

Anxiety does not explain why my penis is longer and I feel a disconnect when I attempt kegels. I just attempted the "Hindi Squat" I felt no pain or discomfort down there. I noticed I have some hardness by the base of my shaft. What do you guys recommend? An ultrasound? Get reexamined? It's been 3 months and the state of my flacid penis has remained the same.

So could someone enlighten me on the symptoms of a damaged suspensory ligament of the penis are? And judging by my current state, is it possible for it to heal to its original state like it was before? Like will my penis go back to its shorter length and become more full?

Okay so I figured the torn suspensory ligament thing is not a huge issue and you can still function without one, however this loss of sex drive is really getting to me. Has anyone here had this issue with minoxidil?

I got an ultrasound, it wasn't a torn ligament or peyronies, so turns out minoxidil shrunk my dick and gave me propecia-like side effects. Nothing else I can do

minoxidil did this? the vasidiliator you put on your scalp? shrunk your dick? there is no scientific way that could happen
