  • The main cause of ED

    Something that rarely gets discussed with these ED issues is the psychological aspect of it. It's the most common cause of ED and it truly needs to be addressed in detail.

    We're going to be coming up with tutorials on this and other similar topics of interest in the very near future. If you'd like to contribute ideas, content, or research time for this project please post your thoughts to this thread.

        I find anxiety is a vidious cycle that is a mental as well as physical componet to ED. Anxiety resricts blood flow, we live in a nation where we are constantly in a state of post traumatic stress.
        • The pressure to measure up causes anxiety.
        • The pressure to perform causes anxiety.
        • The pressure to last longer than a choo choo train causes anxiety.

        I find that a lot of ED victoms have great anxiety.

          Normal nocturnal/waking erections give extremely high odds the physical aspects are working and that the ED is of psychological origin. Lack of nocturnal erections carries a higher probability of an organic cause. That's why one of the first screening tests by urologists is a rigi-scan. Usually nocturnal erections are triggered by the autonomic nervous system, not having a full bladder or erotic dreams, so psychological aspects are generally out of the picture. However, severe or chronic anxiety or depression can also effect nocturnal erections.

            The stamp test would be a good procedure to try if you suspect your condition is psychological..

              I cannot believe that people haven't thought of starting this thread earlier, the psychological aspects of so many things tend to be forgotten or somehow put down in priority. Great thread Big Al!

                Some ED is caused by medical conditions such as diabetes which reduces blood flow and desensitizes the nerves in the penis. If you are afflicted with these symptoms, it becomes difficult to get an erection on demand. Once you encounter this problem (unable to get an erection), you develop anxiety and your mind starts to play games which psychologically intensifies the problem to the point that you develop psychological ED on top physical ED. Now you have to work on correcting both types of ED.

                  I really can't pinpoint the source of my ED. If you said it was physiological I would tell you that my blood pressure is normal, I live a very healthy lifestyle and I get morning wood, and one I "handle" myself I can keep an erection. If you told me it was psychological, then I would ask you, "If it's psychological, then why can't I get an erection when I'm by myself watching porn?"

                    Actually it just supports the whole psychological argument, since you apparently are a normal and healthy individual and you are able to get an erection by yourself (everything is working as it should). Although you can not perform, when others are around, or when pressured.

                    If you use take the cliché analogy of the the amazing athlete that can do so well when he is training by himself etc or at practice, but when the moment of truth comes that person simply cannot perform. This may be due to the pressure felt by that person because of expectation, or simply many other factors. Draw parallels to your life story and you will find that you problems most likely IS psychological.

                      To give a personal account,

                      Confidence is an EQ crusher for me. I sometimes have performance anxiety. My GF tells me not worry, and I get extremely hard when i believe that I am "good enough for her." Here is a specific case.

                      My GF and I were making love and she wanted to please me via blowjob. She could tell I was nervouse but didn't say anything to me for a while. She finally asked me about confidence and I told her how I felt embarrased and insecure about my size. I also told her how I was worrying that I may not cum from her sucking me (I was new to BJs, so it took me a LONG time to cum from it, even thought they felt awesome). She told me that it was all in my head and she told me to relax and enjoy her treat. So, I decided to let go of my worries and enjoy the moment. So I closed my eyes and let go. Suddenly, my dick grew in her mouth so dramatically that it surprised her. She open her eyes wide and said "whoa!" Needless to say, we both enjoyed the rest of the experience.

                      My story shows that confidence affected my erections. And my GF confirms: "When you are confident, the sex is great. The only time you don't satisfy me is when you are so worried that it affects your size and performance."

                        Hey, thanks for your comment. However, I think you misunderstood what I was originally saying. Basically it's this: I can't say my ED is physiological because my health is outstanding. I can't say my ED is psychological because even when I AM ALL BY MYSELF watching porn or imagining a hot girl I still CAN NOT get an erection. I'd really like to know the cause of my ED so that I could fix it. I'm on Kingpoles 5G diet for the time being, about 1 month in. Any ideas?

                            I like not2big comment.
                            This is very true.
                            For example I have some anxiety problem and happen to rarely fail while younger but never becoming anxious about.
                            Now at 50 is not like 30, so I am a bit upset that I am not hard each morning, that I cannot sustain an erection without physical contact and so on.
                            In time this get in combination with anxiety and with horror stories about men that never have sex because are extremely anxious about.
                            The result is psychological ED on top of some age related ED.
                            This is very true.
                            First you need to learn to get over a failure.
                            If you are not affected by it than psychological ED is defeated.
                            This is how I think.

                              And something else that affect me big time.

                              When you read through this type of posts you can find useful information but also many posts of guys that relate in detail how they fail.
                              When someone read a negative thing is stored instantly in your brain but if the thing is positive need time to be stored or is forgotten.
                              This came from the past when fear was essential for survival.
                              So if someone has an worst sexual time with some failures then he get worried, then start reading and in this process, read about fail, after fail, after fail. Also he read that someone said pills does not work, someone said psychotherapy does not work and so on.
                              At the end you are not able to memorize any positive thing because negative information with instantaneous storage are coming to fast without letting the chance of positive ones to be memorized.

                              So, be careful about what you read.
