Most aussie coal mining is open cut . Even underground the health and safety regs mean black lung is rare . There are other risks though.

Yep that desolate scrubland they ripped up west of where I grew up after all the rehab they do on it looked like desolate scrubland . Why I even hear rumors that even after rehab the carrying capacity went down from 2 beasts a square mile to one and a half .

Re train the coal miners? Well who will mine the coal? Like it or not man will be using coal for many years to come. Between China and India they open up on average 3 coal fired plants a month to generate electricity? The demand for coal is still there and I would bet we mine it much safer and cleaner than other countries will do. So do we supply the demand or some third world country who cares nothing about the environment and has no safeguards for mining procedures.
