All 3 paid a lower tax rate than I did, but I did not have the Legal Tax Write Offs that they did.

I don't pay any federal taxes. I spent a lot of time during my working years managing my savings and investing them in products (Roth IRAs and annuities) that are non taxable during retirement. I took advantage of the tax laws. Does that make me a tax cheat or a wise investor?

Should be a flat tax. You pay this but the politicians just won't do it because they want to social engineer the economy.

i spent the last 20 years planning my investment/retirement strategy based on the existing tax laws. To Quickly change the tax laws now would be a disaster for me and many others.

This has actually been an issue in aussie . The constant changes to the laws and regulations etc on superannuation has created uncertainty and in some cases hardship. People investing for retirement are very uncertain if the the ground will shift beneath their feet.
