GM says Venezuela has seized its car plant

    source CNN Money

General Motors says it will immediately halt operations in Venezuela after its plant in the country was unexpectedly seized by authorities.
GM (GM) described the takeover as an "illegal judicial seizure of its assets."
The automaker said the seizure showed a "total disregard" of its legal rights. It said that authorities had removed assets including cars from company facilities.
"[GM] strongly rejects the arbitrary measures taken by the authorities and will vigorously take all legal actions, within and outside of Venezuela, to defend its rights," it said in a statement.
Authorities in Venezuela, which is mired in a severe economic crisis, did not respond to requests for comment

My brother was in charge of GM plant operations in South America years ago. He travel everywhere with armed guards and a driver. He basically stayed in safe houses when there and had plans if a government should fall while he was in country. Didn't matter which country.

We'll just say South America is a rough place.

I wonder how many Venezualian GM cars are exported to the US. If significant, we should place an embargo on them until GM is properly compensated.

            The collapse continues.

reported in the Miami Herald -

Claiming to be primed for civil war, a Venezuelan general issued orders to prepare for the future use of snipers against anti-government protesters, according to a secret recording of a regional command meeting held three weeks ago at a military base in the northwestern Venezuelan city of Barquisimeto.

On the recording, obtained from a Washington source that has provided el Nuevo Herald with information on Venezuela for previous stories, the generals discuss the legality and risks of using snipers during the massive demonstrations taking place almost daily against President Nicolás Maduro.

The military, however, insists publicly that it is not using lethal force against demonstrators, a claim that was repeated on Wednesday by Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez.

The meeting, chaired by Division General José Rafael Torrealba Pérez, took place in the last week of April as Venezuela’s socialist government continued to try to contain the unrest. Local news reports said at least four demonstrators were killed by gunfire this week, raising the death toll to at least 42, with more than 700 wounded.

Venezuela just defaulted, moving deeper into crisis

                  As reported by CNN.:

"The South American country defaulted on its debt, according to a statement issued Monday night by S&P Global Ratings. The agency said the 30-day grace period had expired for a payment that was due in October.

A debt default risks setting off a dangerous series of events that could exacerbate Venezuela's food and medical shortages."

Seems when things couldn't possibly get much worse, they did.
Gee, what a disaster of a government/lack of one.

                    from yahoo news-

SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela imposed electricity rationing this week in six western states, as the crisis-hit country's creaky power grid suffered from a drought that has reduced water levels in key reservoirs needed to run hydroelectric power generators.

The four-hour formal outages began on Thursday. But many residents scoffed at the announcement, wryly noting that they have been suffering far more extended blackouts during the last week.

Crumbling infrastructure and lack of investments have hit Venezuela's power supply for years. Now, the situation has been exacerbated by dwindling rains.

In the worst-hit western cities, business has all but ground to a halt at a time when the OPEC nation of 30 million is already suffering hyperinflation and a profound recession. Many Venezuelans are unable to eat properly on salaries of just a couple of dollars per month at the black market rate, sparking malnutrition, emigration and frequent sights of Venezuelans digging through trash or begging in front of supermarkets.

The Oil industry gets plundered -

Workers Flee and Thieves Loot Venezuela’s Reeling Oil Giant
                      Posted 11:20 p.m. yesterday

By WILLIAM NEUMAN and CLIFFORD KRAUSS, New York Times

EL TIGRE, Venezuela — Thousands of workers are fleeing Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, abandoning once-coveted jobs made worthless by the worst inflation in the world. And now the hemorrhaging is threatening the nation’s chances of overcoming its long economic collapse, union leaders, oil executives and workers say. 7

Desperate oil workers and criminals are also stripping the oil company of vital equipment, vehicles, pumps and copper wiring, carrying off whatever they can to make money. The double drain — of people and hardware — is further crippling a company that has been teetering for years yet remains the country’s most important source of income

                        the nightmare still continues-

The Venezuelan military has blockaded a major highway link with Colombia to prevent opponents of the government from bringing food and medicine into Venezuela, a country gripped by life-threatening shortages and a deepening political crisis.

Troops positioned truck trailers and shipping containers to block the lanes of the Tienditas Bridge on the border in northwestern Venezuela on Wednesday.

“The government headed by Nicolás Maduro, who has presided over Venezuela since 2013, declared a state of emergency in 2016. That year the inflation rate hit 800%. Things have since gone from bad to worse. By 2018 inflation was an estimated 80,000%”

That’s about 200% a day. By the time Venezuelans get paid at work, they do not have enough buying power by the time they get to the store. That’s assuming the store has anything to sell.

How does the dictator continue to pay the military?

Here’s an idea. We do. We give the military a raise. With conditions of course. They are obvious. Of course.
A prayer, is kinda the same as a "Like". If there are enough likes, God will take notice. So "Like" away please. My daughter needs your prayers. Thank You.
