Yeah to an extent , there is a lot of talk on related subjects in aussie at the moment .

So if you are gay you can run into issues from the society around you . If you are black and date a white girl it can cause issues and so forth would be an example . The law comes into it also ,so "marriage equality" aka gay marriage is an example. When I was younger the state I am in anal was illegal. now note not gay sex as such but anal was illegal.

Lots of weird things impress people though: money, living address, occupation, body type, eye color, hair color, jewelry, car, height, clothes, breast size, penis size, race...

Some of it we accept as personal taste and some we judge as character flaws.
And some of it, we interpret to fit our bias ("He says that he prefers blondes but that is just a euphemism for saying that he is too good to date women of color.")

We still had some states with "anti-sodomy" laws on the books until 2003 and, while they were very rarely enforced, I did not understand why there was no real sustained effort to repeal every one of them.

In 2003, our Supreme Court declared them unconstitutional.

Perhaps, people felt that was just an easier way to achieve their goals. Personally, I think that fighting, and winning the fight, state legislature by state legislature was a better, if slower, long term strategy.

"Resolving" an issue in the court system may resolve the legal aspects, but frequently leaves the social aspects unresolved.
