Living in California and being part of the public health response to COVID your comment is well informed. California was earlier than other states to do a lockdown and mask but it was already too late. The failures here are owned by the Federal and Local Governments and a public to a large degree that are resistant to information that conflicts with whatever they happen to think. Much the same was the case when in 1984 New York instituted the law to wear seatbelts and it took 11 years for other states to pass it into law. There were "studies" put forward that your chances of surviving a high speed crash increased if you could be thrown from the car instead of wearing a seatbelt. Then there were the first amendment challenges. "You can't make me, I have rights." Thankfully the first amendment does not protect free speech, but it does allow for ridiculous and ill informed speech. The arc of seatbelt acceptance is illustrative of the arc of acceptance with these new precautions. Public health is still trying to push back on the debunk "study" that vaccines cause autism which was yet another veiled attempt at flouting public health efforts misguidedly thinking them infringements on liberties. As with seat belts, the sheer numbers of deaths and more legitimate information triumphant a decade. We have seen this many times, other countries have learned their lessons, we have not. I guess we need a few more pandemic (which are inevitable) and a lot more deaths to sober the public into being appropriately cautious. California has also really dropped the ball on the vaccine roll out and the Governor is at some point going to have to speak to why that is the case. California is in good company as most, not all, have botched the roll out because there has been no Federal oversight and states are ill equipped to scale up to what is required. Hopefully that will start to change in just over 24 hours and over the next hundred days.

If you would read the research I've been providing, you would see that there is zero correlation between lockdown timing and case counts or deaths. I'm not sure why you would choose make that argument against the evidence except that you have chosen to ignore and/or dismiss the evidence because it contradicts what you want to believe. Again... cognitive dissonance.

Fizz - Can you use another analogy instead of seat belts? If I want to put my own life in danger, that's on me. The US government wasn't constructed with the purpose of protecting me from myself. I was ok with stoplights - they have proven to be effective in preventing me from killing someone else. But efficacy is at the heart of that and it has to be. We have to be able to weight the cost against the benefit to make these kinds of decisions but the efficacy of masks is very much in question. You, personally choose to not question it, but the scientific community at large (not just the ones you defer to) says otherwise.

According to the CDC, there were an estimated flu related deaths during the 2017 - 2018 flu season of 46,000 to 95,000. The estimated deaths due to Covid-19 (perhaps including some flu deaths) is over 500,000 through mid February. I wouldn’t consider that a scare tool!

I think the analogy works. If you are a threat to yourself or others you can be Baker Acted. Society still frowns on self harm. Wishing you the best. Stay safe and health. The number of cases and death continue to mount not to scare anyone but continue mask wearing and practicing social distancing all the things we know work. Cheers

Society can frown on whatever they like. That doesn't make it the job of the government to prevent it from happening. Thousands of people die every year from drowning - perhaps we should outlaw swimming without scuba gear. You're ok with being told what to do with your life by the government. Most of us - and the folks who wrote The Constitution - are not.

How do you know they work? People who claim to follow the science would be aware that masks have now been proven to be virtually ineffective at preventing the spread of the virus. Just sayin...
