In fairness, NLP isn't a player thing, it just gets used that way. It has applications in psychotherapy, self confidence and positive change, as well as sales, business influence and persuasion. And then there's the seduction community stuff - which uses aspects of all the above. Whatever anyone's feelings might be about the PUA/seduction stuff, I find the NLP side of this actually quite interesting, and in some cases really good advice as it's often as much about your own state of mind as any psuedo-hypnosis silliness.

I know people who've had some great experiences with CBT, and NLP is really just a more esoteric version that goes a bit further in terms of practical application. The main thing that really attracts me to it is the way it uses models and symbols (very Jungian) to approach understanding and practical appication of ideas, and that sits very well with the way I see and approach the world.

For instance, here's a trick right out of the influence textbooks, and just as applicable to parents as it might be in any other area of life.

The idea is that in order to cognitively process an idea, you have to mentally access a representation of it in order to understand it. This is why much NLP-ish language often gets loaded with phrases like "Imagine this" and "consider that", it's about training yourself to become familiar with the idea of success rather than failure. NLP also says that a remembered experience is indistinguishable to your brain from an imagined experience, and I think there's some weight to this. Memories are fallible reconstructions of what actually happened because they focus on the elements of (edit: your perception of) that memory that were important.

I digress a little, but the point is that to consider an idea you have to recall it into conscious thought. This has the result that if you were to tell an overweight person (or they were to tell themselves) NOT to eat that cake, they have to mentally access the feeling, sensation and experience of EATING the cake so they can understand what they're being asked not to do.

The upshot is that telling somebody (or yourself) NOT to do something is cognitively as good as saying to DO that something, and when associated with desire, that more often than not has the OPPOSITE effect.

So how do you apply this in order to establish change or discipline? You have to replace the instruction NOT to do something with an instruction to DO SOMETHING instead. So rather than saying "don't eat that cake" you say "stick to your diet". Simple, weak example maybe, just outlining some of the ideas.

The NLP seduction community use this idea of mental representations and states, on the basis that memories and fantasies are close enough as to be indistinguishable. There may be some notion of deception about it, but it's largely about inviting others to visualise and experience good feelings and sensations. The suggestion element can largely be summarised as innuendo. By establishing some uncertainty about your meaning, the other person will need to consider the idea of both what you said and the implied suggestion. The nefarious side is that they try to trick the other person into associating those good feelings with you. I find it all fascinating, but I do have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, what's wrong with making people feel good? I would say this is a perfectly lovely way to interact with all people whether you're trying to pick them up or not. On the other hand, there are certain "practitioners" who take such things too far and actively seek to screw with people's minds. There is no doubt you can do this too, but however you might look at it, ultimately how you interact with people is always bounded by your own ethics and morals. I don't believe you can tar this whole branch of fringe psychology with a bad brush because con artists may use similar approaches.

Hmm being a branch of fringe psyc isn't prestigious in my view.
Used in sales and persauasion, I am sure it is.
Used by the seduction community yes it is.
Certain practioners use it to screw with peoples heads, yes they do.
Ahh ethics and morals, ah yes, seems to be an area for many nlp practitioners to work on.

That's a fair comment, though I would argue those people mostly came to these ideas with the intention first and the tools second.

The link appears non comerical and seems a good resource ,for Romanian speakers interested in pe. I stated that I believed it would be non comercial, as you have been here a long time and know not to post commercial links.

This thread is many months old and you have been active in that time, there are nlp fans on site and I thought you must have found them. The word "players" is somewhat loaded and is what spanky and I have been talking on.

We have come to the conclusion that nlp can be used in a way I do not find moral ,if the person cones to it with that intent.
