I usually don't care much for martial arts films, but I recently watched a film suggested by a friend.
"hidden dragon crouching tiger"
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) - IMDb
I really enjoyed it, but there were some strange special effects with fighters gracefully jumping and floating, and the final scene was the strangest of all, the lead character jumping off a bridge down into a deep ravine into a mountain. But I figured that the visuals should be taken poetically, not literally. but it has sparked my interest in martial arts and martial arts films.
Any of you have any interest in either? I think I would like to see a really good martial arts film that doesn't have excessive liberties with special effects, but things that someone could actually do. But still amazing none the less. Any suggestions?

Last year I watched a martial arts film that was quite new that I liked, I think the film was from about 2007 but I can't remember WTF it's called. But I don't usually like them.

1471988,
Sorry, I should have said "spoiler alert" before going into any detail. I just thought anyone interested might have seen it already. I just watched it because someone gave me the video for free. Also because someone else had recommended it because he liked Asians in general, their culture, and he taught martial arts. I think you can still enjoy watching it. there are some other interesting aspects of the movie that I haven't spoiled. But as NP97 said, it sucked, I would have to agree on some aspects, because the special effects were just too out there to be believeable, It almost seemed like a joke, like he was making fun of martial arts films. But yet it wasn't so intentional that one would laugh in the right way. But if you understand the motions of the action scenes as poetic or symbolic than it might work. Maybe there is something about Asian culture or martial art culture that is being idealized, not sure.
NP97,
I saw the original karate kid when it was relatively new. I didn't know much about martial arts then, kind of like I don't know much now. But I saw some of it recently, and thought the plot was a little too cliche and canned. But its some twenty plus years later, and movies are different now, so of course its going to seem kind of corny. That weird 'crane' posture or whatever he used to win the other guy, that seems to implausible. I am thinking 'come on' a martial arts expert is not going to know what your going to do? Especially if you hold it for 2 minutes to get ready to kick him?
pterodactyl,
A bruce lee film, now that seems like an idea. I wanted to see the film with him or his son, where he died during filming. Wasn't that 'The raven" or something like that? I remember it was criticized, but what is a producer supposed to do? I would also think the actor would probably like the movie to be released also.

The BEST martial arts film I have ever seen is Chocolate, by some thai directore. The story is actually pretty boring, but the fight choreography is the most stunning I have ever seen in any film. Just brilliant! Check out Born to Fight too, which is from the same guy
