  • tips to gain weight?

im currently 137lbs and 6' tall.. i would like to get my bodyweight up to 160+ what are some great ways to do this?

i may start taking protein powder 100g or so of that a day and try to eat a loaf of bread a day if that would help any. I figured since i visit this site just to read stories and such so often i might as well see if anybody knows how i could gain some mass!

i have tried GOMAD in a day but only could hold down half a gallon and i hate milk so i shortly scratched that idea, plus milk isnt exactly cheap

Sorry if this gets you excited, its a complete utter waste of a comment but I'd like to hop on board because I need to gain some weight as well!! I'd prefer to gain lean weight, very lean as I am >%5 bodyfat, and mostly muscle, I am also hoping to train myself to keep my fast twitch muscles on point, as I don't want to be a meathead who can't wave his arms in a circle because my muscles get in the way
I have no problem being with just one woman, but I can't not eat all the donuts.

You're going to have to stretch your stomach out a bit, because your current appetite does not support the amount of food you need to grow. But that's okay - this is very doable.

      1. Eat more frequently. Even if you can only do 3 real "meals" a day, fit in a few high calorie snacks.
      2. Don't eat anything plain. Healthy fats and oils often make good toppings (ex. butter or peanut butter on bagels, or olive oil on vegetables).
      3. Eat a little more than you'd like. No need to get close to the vomiting point, but you'll have to eat a bit more than you currently do at meal times, just like how overweight people sometimes have to leave the table a little hungry. I find that pushing myself for 1-2 meals per day is adequate.
      4. Don't go to bed on an empty stomach.
      5. Carry food with you when you go out and don't let too much time pass between sittings.
      6. Some good foods to eat: red meat, chicken, nuts, milk (doesn't have to be a gallon, just get some down if you're not lactose intolerant).
      7. Make whey protein shakes with milk, healthy fats, protein powder, etc. You can easily get close to 1,000 calories out of a simple 16 oz. shake.

Hope that helps, dude. Eat more and properly execute your lifts in the weight room.

just count how many calories you eat usually, and then simply try to eat 50 % or even twice the amount.

you need to eat several times a day, if you can not eat that much at once.
          me for example
i can get 3,5 to 4 litres in my stomach, so if i tried am trying to eat as much as possible every day,i would get overweight soon

Don't eat empty calories like sugary drinks or fast food. Balance your meals and be careful of knocking 100g of protein powder into your body daily. You will be shitting through the eye of a needle! The body can only absorb 20g max at a time and that shit is full of shall we say extra goodness which help you grow real fast and I am not talking about your dick! Be careful guys eat well balanced meals keep away from shakes unless you are seriously training and then only as a last resort and take sparingly. You will gain weight but it will be a big belly and flabby thighs if you are not careful. Better to be naturally thin and athletic.

i see where most of you are coming from the thing with the meal part is that i live in college dorms so my dinner has to be microwaveable most of the time, i grill out now and then and do 10lbs or so of pork chops to keep in the fridge then microwave at a later time it works pretty well.

but as far as being naturally thin and athletic, the hell with that i want to be 160-180lbs and somewhat chubby in my legs/arms more than my stomach area.. i eat a couple sandwiches a day and 5+ eggs and i plan on sticking to the 100g of protein a day simply because ive heard that will definitely put on mass, and aafter a week of it im seeing no negative side effects

eat a lot of healthy protein and good exercise. AND SLEEP! I eat about 6 medium size meals a day when I can, just to stay where am at and to build a lil more mass. I workout days a week. I've been at 165 for a year now, do get a lil belly fat sometimes from when I binge out on a pint of ben and jerrys but it goes away fast... Don't eat more calories than you burn....

Eat lots of ice cream with sprinkles, nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry or two. Eat a bowl or 2 a night and then go but some new clothes in a month.

If you arent gaining then no matter how much you think you are eating... you arent eating enough. I hear this all the time. You just need to eat more. And college shouldnt be an excuse. PB and J sandwiches are great with a pretty solid macro breakdown. Tuna fish sandwiches are the same deal. Cook up a ton of microwavable brown rice, heat it up and then eat cans of sardines with it. Any veggie can be eaten uncooked and they are better this way since cooking breaks down a lot of the micronutrients. 100 g of protein is light if you are trying to add muscle, try to be getting 1g per pound of bodyweight a day. Increase that intake as you gain weight

Milk I actually really cheap. A gallon is 2-3$ depending on where you are. Its the perfect food in a sense that the macro breakdown is perfectly balanced. No need to GOMAD, but drinking a half gallon throughout the day is easy, quick and will yield in about 1250 calories extra to your diet with ease. 1250 calories for 1.50$ is absolutely the least expensive solution, period.

I would assume you are trying to gain muscle, as adding just fat will make you feel like poop. So a guy your size has a lot of room to grow. Look into a full body routine like the one I link below. It should help you gain a lot of size since you hit every muscle three to four times a week. I did this a few months ago with a great diet and put on 20 lbs. You have to train and eat big to get big my man. If you follow this lifting routine and eat lots of food you will most certainly gain a lot of muscle and some fat.

Ohh and YOU MUST EAT MORE CALORIES THEN YOU BURN... Get most of your protein from whole food or milk. Save your shakes for after workouts.

Lets do a little myth busting in this thread though. Meal frequency is a myth. I eat 4 large meals a day, 700-1000 calories a meal. Its all very healthy, so its a lot of food. Some people cant do this so thats why they recommend 6-7 so they are smaller and easier to handle. But if you are eating 6-7 small meals because you think it keeps you lean, adds more muscle, your body only absorbs so much, etc. Then you are sadly misinformed. If you need the articles for the proof I can link them just ask.

Myth 2. Your body only absorbs 20g protein at a time. I want to know where this came from? Cause I hear it all the time in my store and it simply isnt true. There are so many factors that determine how fast protein breaks down. So if you eat 60g of protein sure you wont absorb it all at once, normally it trickles into your system as it digests. I know guys that fast all day, 16 hours straight, eat one extremely large meal with over 150g of protein, and are built like a brick shithouse. Your body absolutely can absorb more protein then 20g. Now if you are eating several meals its good to balance out the protein so its equal throughout each meal, but dont be afraid to be taking in well about 20g per meal, shit I eat at least 50g a meal.

Word of advice: All these people telling you to over eat, be wary. You may end up with an unwanted layer of body fat, which is much harder to get rid of than build muscle. Trust me. I don't really know why guys want to get big as opposed to get ripped. I see guys at the gym who are in permabulk mode. Yes they are large mammals, but they have no definition, have guts and look like shit. Why do you want to bench 350lbs? For your career? To fight people? If not, you're better served trying to get ripped. I believe over eating speeds the process of again, as it does in animals, why not humans? You are healthier when you are lean as opposed to a big mammal that has to eat and shit big meals 6 times a day. If you're trying to look good, forget about bulking up. Just eat enough to have enough energy for your workouts and recover properly. You will gain size and strength, slowly and properly. If you have body image issues and feel you are just too small, well take it from me. Getting all beefed up and then realizing that you actually looked better before when you had nice stomach definition etc. is really frustrating when you have to start doing dedicated cardio again to get back to where you were a year ago.

                        Something to consider.

Also, you can't really get specific advice from people because you will have a different body type than them. You really have to gauge your eating habits by your body type.

I agree with not overeating. Ones body will process food as it will and if you are eating alot and still finding it tough to gain weight then eating more wont help. A well known body builder named Lee haney once said "if you cant flex it, dont carry it" what he meant that it was better to gaing lean muscle then to bulk up and then have to shred.

The best way to gain weight is to eat healthy and lift, you will gain muscle and it will be lean as opposed to all these guys who think it is better to bulk up then shred. that really means get fat then bust your ass trying to get back in shape.

Benching 350 isnt so bad, I have seen some fellas that are ripped benching 350 while others who look bigger can not. One doesnt have to look freakish to bench high weights. i benched 385 in a judges power lifting event in the Navy at 205 and I didnt look like a freak. A couple of guys who looked like they were juicers and much larger than I was failed out well before I did. Get ripped, get strong and eat healthy.

Hey sorry in advance if this is messy I'm sending it on my iPhone but I had to reply right away after seeing bigo and mile's responses above.

We aren't talking about bro-science here when it comes to eating more, nothing could be as simple to understand that when it comes to gain weight it all comes down to calories in and calories out. If you do what the two men above say, undereat to gain weight and lift weights then one thing will surely happen. You may gain some muscle yes, but your weight won't change, you'll have what is called body recomposition. You'll lose a few pounds of fat, if you have any, and gain a few pounds of muscle. This will however stop pretty quickly. You'll be able to gain strebgth for awhile, turning yourself in an ant, little guy who can lift a lot for his size, but if you don't increase your calories you will stay the same weight, period.

In order to gain physical weight and go from 130lbs to 160 you will have to consume more calories then you burn. Not a lot but 300-500 is a good surplus to aim for. If your eating good food, and lifting the right way you'll minimize fat gains. Let me say that again, you will minimize the fat gains. Yes you will gain some fat but who freaking cares. These guys that say losing weight is tough have never really tried. Losing weight is as simple as gaining it... Less calories then your body needs a day or a caloric surplus.

I can understand need research links for supplements but damn for gaining and losing weight it's as easy as 1,2,3 if you listen. I run triathlons all warm season and in the off season pack on weight every year, my body fat changes by 1-2% in gaining 20 pounds over a few months. Mean that at 11% body fat after my bulk I guarentee I still have far less fat on my body then most of the men saying overrating will gain just flab. Sure uou sit around and eat Bon bons and ice cream you'll gain all fat. But if you eat a surplus of calories from good foods without overdoing it you won't gain much fat.

Eating even a maintenance level of calories daily and working out will result in a small frame, with your body constantly in catabolism breaking down your current muscle tissue to provide the muscles you just worked out with amino acids for repair, it's a never ending miserable circle that results in no gains and a weak frame. Do your research before spewing bullshit please.

Hey newtope, maybe you misread what I said, maybe I didnt say it correctly. First off I never said to under eat in any way. Not even close. Gaining lean muscle is still a gain. To gain you must eat as much or more than you are burning. I said to eat the propper amount to allow you to gain muscle. You can gain muscle without adding pounds of fat.

Eating way too much is what I am saying is no good, an example would be that if two guys weigh in at 160 and both are trying to gain muscle they can do so without gorging out on garbage just for the sake of adding calories.

Say one guy gains 10 lbs and goes to 170, the other gains 3 lbs and goes to 163 but they both gained 3 lbs of actual lean muscle who is doing it better.

What I meant was that some people will not gain weight easily so if they find that adding 1000 calories a day does no more for them than adding 250 calories then adding the 1000 can be a waste and it doesnt make sense. I obviously know that if one is trying to add muscle they must eat enough food to do so. I also know that I have watched guys eat weight gainer products and have just as hard as a time gainging weight as they did before they started using them.

You should go back and read what I read before you disagree with it. I went from 165 ( 18 years old ) to 205 by the time I was 23 or so and I didnt get fat, did I eat a lot, yes, and it was more than I was burning. It wasnt enough to get fat and if I had started to gain fat I would have cut down a bit but not too much. Are you saying that one can not gain muscle without gaining fat, if you are saying that then you are wrong.

My eating plan did take some trial and error, I logged my intake in a book that I tracked calories in, cardio performed, as well as carbs, protiens and fats through out the day.

Now when I say overeating I meen litereally, needing 4500 a day to gain muscle makes eating 6000 a day absolutely stupid. If your body cant convert it to muscle you either shit it out or gain too much fat, a little is ok but I am talking about over eating too the point of packing on fat.

                              Now did I misread you?
