It is currently 2016 not 2014.
Yes they are traveling through which is my point .
Yes Turkey has taken in a lot which I have stated several times and even asked why it has not got more help. Yes there are many people from other countries like Iraq and Afghans , are you suggesting these people have less social issues in Europe .
This

many western African states where the migrants have been motivated by dire economic conditions.

Is straight economic migration . Mind you I suspect much of the rest is also.

Hmm Marinera am I correct in saying your view is that euro hasn't really taken in many refugees and that it can and should take in vastly more ? That basically euro should take the ones that turn up ?
That social problems are basically the fault of the host countries ?
That the issues (because these guys are from a number of countries and we have been calling them Syrians for convience ) are all caused by the West anyway?

There isn't really any arguing by anybody, that I can see, that part of the immigration is economic immigration. I think I told that in my very first post : those are people who are not immigrants; part of economic migration is ok, being legal migrants, meaning that, said it simple, a Country of Europe asked for migrants from extra-EU Countries. Then you have illegal immigrants.
The real sole point here is : what you can do with illegal immigrants? Repatriating them is not easy, because you need the consensus of the original Country; it is also pretty much unuseful, because most of them will just come back again; and it is costly. So, what I really would like to know, is : what is your solution? It is not an ideologic arguing, it is a matter of costs and benefits.
For those who believe to the propaganda that every immigrant is provided by first class lifestyle, you should check on youtube how that people are leaving when arriving in Italy or Greece; they are in jail or worse. Their human rights are violated. According to the Law, they should remain in those identification centers for no more than 3 months; in Italy, they remain on average for 18 months, lacking higienic services, eating things that a dog wouldn't eat, lacking medicines, etc.. Look at this :
Immigrants sew mouths shut in Italy to demand release
ROME | By Steve Scherer
Nine illegal immigrants detained in Italy have stitched their lips together with thread from their bedsheets in a protest to demand their release.
The protest, which started at a center near Rome on Saturday, came days after video emerged of immigrants at another camp standing naked in the cold to be sprayed for scabies. It drew new calls for the closure of detention centers and for changes to immigration laws.
Using a needle improvised from a cigarette lighter, four Tunisians each made a single stitch to join their lips in the middle, Filiberto Zaratti, a lawmaker who visited the protesters, told Reuters.

These are two questions, actually. EU has taken a high number of refugees, in absolute terms. The number isn't that high when compared to EU population and territory. It shouldn't be a drama at all, number are numbers, 0.5% refugees per year isn't a big problem.
But it is becoming a problem for several reasons; these reasons can be grouped in a big, one problem: EU is a ghost, every Country is left alone with the problem; so every country is pushed to react like 'Who gives a fuck? It's not my problem.'. Nationalist egoisms are fed up. Add that some parts of the single Countries have their own specific problem; anyone European can have a vague idea of the problems of Sicily, and what happens when 200,000 migrants per year comes there if no Government neither EU are doing their job. Or malta, or Greece, which is very small. And it's not just a matter of living migrants, the inhabitants are seeing everyday human deads floating in the sea or on the beach.
The second question, if Europe should take even more refugees, hides a supposition: that these people are coming because they like to come here. This is not true, a big number of them die trying to come here, and when they arrive the dream of many of them is to go back to their land when the war ends. If the war does not ends, everybody should take more refugees: not just Europe, but every civilised country where there isn't a war, proportionally according to theirs means.
Which social problems, specifically?
I think I have just answered that question, with the link that made your colleague so much furious. ISIS is a fault of the West, Saddam Hussein was put in charge by the west, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are allied of the West, Syrian president took the power with the help of the West. Israel established in Palestine with a decision of the West and is pretty much the most beloved friend of the West. These are facts.Yes, it's me.
