So gun control in the US requires syncronized laws in mexico and canada. That said, we have a history of 'throwing our weight around' on policy like drug laws and intellectual property laws, so influencing neighbors is within reason.

Jay1983, it's sad to say, the but statistically the person at greatest risk of being the target of your gun is one of your family members in an accident or "heat-of-the-moment." That gets to why we have gun-free-zones. We know that alcohol and loaded firearms do not mix. If we did allow guns into bars, there would be a lot more fights that end in someone dead instead of just a black eye. And by the way, it would be way the hell more than 50 people a year!

Scarlet, where has gun control been implemented where it failed to lower deaths? I do know Australia has had no mass shootings since they banned them. Anyone have quick access to their overall violence stats before/after gun-banning?

And I totally agree that drunk driving is a worse problem than terrorism at the moment. I am in favor of auto-braking (if not fully self-driving cars). Perhaps part of the war on terrorism budget should go into car-safety technology.

Removing guns would send the terrorists to other means. Which is a good thing. Guns are designed to kill with speed accuracy and portability. The "alternate" methods you listed lack that effectiveness. But more to the point, most americans that are shot are shot by other americans (not terrorists)! It's just extra redonkulous that someone on a watch list gets to stroll in to pick up dangerous weapons.

Part of the reason for Australia's success besides banning guns is that if you use one you are going to jail for a very long time no questions asked.

Australia is also an island so any policies we have regarding bans on guns are much easier to enforce as we do not have a mexico to smuggle in guns

Other means? It's always focus on the gun because it is easy, it's simple, yet the problem is complex.

Back in the 90"s a man got thrown out of a bar/social club in NYC. He got mad. He went home, made some gasoline cocktails, went back to the club, tossed them in, barricaded the door, and 87 people burned to death. I'd rather take the bullet and have at least the ability to put one into the bad guy.

Chicago has a decades-old ban on gun stores. The last year the city of Chicago passed an ordinance allowing gun stores. No gun store has opened in the city yet.

Yet they have the HIGHEST GUN Crime in the U.S. Humm !

I live in California with arguably the strictest gun laws in the Nation, and Gang members with Criminal Records have no problems getting Guns. Illegal Guns. It is the same in Washington DC.


In Virginia the purchase of all firearms require the buyer to complete a criminal background check.

I have guns to protect the ones around me; I could careless about myself.

The chart is perfectly accurate. 250 million people, 3 of 100,000 means about 9000 people. Chicago alone gives at least 400 of those a year.

You can't ban guns in the US. There are too many of them. Then you would only have bad guys with guns. What we need to do is enforce the laws and do proper security checks. Nobody should be able to walk into a gun store and just walk out with an assault rifle. That is ridiculous. Nobody needs an assault rifle for any reason. Im not suggesting banning them, but there needs to be stricter enforement and better background checks, maybe a training course or certification. Sorry, just handing any Joe Smoe an assualt rifle is ludicrous.

Making it harder for criminals or terrorists to obtain weapons is the idea. Could they build a bomb, sure. But thats harder than going down to the corner gun store. If you are a law abiding citizen, whats wrong with going through a proper security check.

I have no problem with stricter laws on purchasing guns. Private sales of guns will still be a problem.

Back to the subject of this thread, banning guns will not solve the problem. Has everyone forgot about the Boston marathon bombings? Same situation, a couple of converted Islamic radical Americans.
