And in case you didn't notice, you pay money to a Car Insurer. One part of that insurance is (as required by law) coverage of the damage you might do to others. There is currently no requirement for any gun insurance. But there probably should be!

This thread and the title of the link you provided is about gun violence in the US. So according to the CDC deaths by gun violence(homicide) is 3.5/100000 11208 FastStats - Homicide. Deaths by motorvehicle acidence is 10.7/100000 or 33804. FastStats - Accidents or Unintentional Injuries Now if you want add in suicidal deaths by firearms that's a different story and debate.

So the question is, how big a problem is arson? How many thousands die from fires started by arsonists? Or is it a much smaller problem than gun violence-&-accidents?

This gets to the point: some people, some of the time, make bad decisions. So we create structure to limit the effect of those bad decisions on others (e.g. car insurance, car safety inspections)

As for what you are calling "socialism":
Do you plan on accepting a Social Security Check, or will you be donating that to the national debt?
How about Medicare... any direct relatives of yours who are or have been on that program, or have you insisted to cover their expenses yourself?

In the 1920's the private charities were overrun by the needs of all the unemployed during the great depression. It was those private (including 'religious') charities who lobbied the government for national relief programs. The US has been swallowing "that shit" for decades now. I don't see one elected official submitting a bill to curtail those programs.

We as a country, long long ago, dropped the notion that people are to fend for themselves.

Hmm looking at the stats from my post 198 I find something interesting.

The firearm homicide rate in the US exceeds the TOTAL homicide rate in the combined other countries . So the view that another just as effective form of homicide can be easily found is suspect . In fact one could launch the argument that the availability of guns creates a culture of violence and increases TOTAL homicide rates from .9 to 6 with 4.1 coming directly from firearms .

Lets say that again. TOTAL that is all forms combined guns ,knives ,bombs , poison whatever in other high income countries .9 per 100,000 , firearm homicide alone 4.1 per 100,000 in the US.

On the other hand in regard to suicide other means are indeed found.

I'm not going to deny that the crime rate in the US is high as well as mental illness. That's where the vast majority of gun deaths are from. Those are the problems that need to be addressed in this country not the gun.

Yes, mental illness is a big problem. I have mentioned before that I worked in a state run psychiatric hospital for 10 years back in my twenties. When I was hired there was over 2500 patients there at the time. When I was laid off there was a little less than 600. Some were transferred to general hospitals but many of them were placed back out into society. I can tell you without a doubt that the first thing most of them will do is stop taking their medication.
