An article in the UK magazine Nature on 7 April 2013 (Red meat + wrong bacteria = bad news for hearts : Nature News & Comment) describes research byStanley Hazen, head of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and others that consuming l-carnitine increased blood levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a compound that, evidence suggests, can alter the metabolism of cholesterol and slow the removal of cholesterol that accumulates on arteries' walls. The researchers concluded that gut bacteria found in red meat eaters seem to convert the l-carnitine into TMAO.
Daniel Rader, director of preventive cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, is reported as saying that the study makes a “fairly compelling” case that intestinal bacteria feeding on l-carnitine increase the risk of heart disease.
I would be interested in other members views on this .

Was coming here to post just what you did. The article appeared in our paper yesterday. The study looked at over 2000 people, and the Cleveland Clinic is one of the most renown institutions in the world. It does give one something to think about. I immediately looked at the supplements I take and was relieved that none of them have it in them.

That is very alarming as L-Carnitine is among the primary component on weight loss pills.

I know this thread originated a while back, but I'm hoping whoever started it is still interested. I just joined this site, but I'm very knowledgeable in regards to health/fitness and nutrition, as well as supplementation. L-carnitine does not have a direct effect on sperm quality. I don't understand where that came from. It is an amino acid that...basically speeds up your body's metabolism by helping to break down certain calories more efficiently. I suppose it could give you an increase in strength because of this, which could potentially allow you to lift more weight, thus increasing testosterone, which would enrich sperm quality indirectly. But I'd go a different route. If you want an increase in testosterone, D-aspartic acid will do the trick. Take about 3,000 mg daily and cycle off after a few weeks. Increased testosterone will help you in ALL sexual aspects, including sperm quality. As far as improving sperm count or quality directly, I'd personally recommend Maca or Epimedium.

I came across this thread recenly and decided to add to it rather than start a new one. Trust that was the right thing to do. I was interested in L-Carnitine because of a study by researchers at the Sapienza University of Rome discovered a mix of L-arginine and L-carnitine improved the EQ of men with ED. I also gather L- carnitine assists in fat metabolism so is claimed to help weight reduction when combined with exercise.
I have been using L-arginine along with cardiac focussed exercise and I have found it has both improved my EQ and assisted in my weight reduction/ cardiac exercise campaign which in itself has probably contributed to EQ. I was hoping to add L-carnitine to assist with both but will now desist. I am 66 but believe my testosterone level is ok so I am not trying to seriously lift it though a small boost might be helpful. I have to be careful because I have a family history of high blood cholesterol and I take vytorin to control it.

You're doing things right, in my opinion. Nothing is better for EQ and overall health than clearing those arteries through cardio and dieting.
And the arginine will definitely help blood flow by means of increasing NO retention in the blood. Citrulline will do this as well. You might want to check out Ginko Biloba, which also aids in blood flow, to the brain in particular but also to other parts, and DHEA, which will probably help you in various aspects such as sex drive and overall energy.
