Bathmate great suction when valve is closed

Been using the x30 for about a month. I trimmed my pubs but more often than not I cannot get suction if I leave the valve open as directed. Sometimes I can. What I end up doing is closing the valve at the bottom of the pump. 100% of the time I get suction. Is this safe? It feels exactly the same and I don't need to pump more than once usually.

After some time the valves have a tendency to get tricky on some models. You can adjust it manually as you have been or get a replacement valve free if you ordered from bathpump.com.
